Montgomery, Alabama — A brand-new musical tribute titled “Highway Dreaming” hit major digital platforms this month, giving the nation's 3.5 million commercial freight haulers a dedicated anthem. Spearheaded by the Alabama Trucking Association, the project was designed to honor the endurance and daily sacrifices of long-haul operators who keep supply chains running.

The concept for the track originated at the ATA annual convention last May following a performance by the Sweet Tea Trio. Vocalists Kate Falcon, Taylor Morrison, and Savannah Sawyer delivered an a cappella national anthem that inspired ATA director of advocacy and marketing Josh Vaughn to commission a dedicated trucking tribute ahead of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.

Collaborating under the banner Heroes of the Highway, Vaughn partnered with Birmingham songwriter Will Stewart to lay down tracks at the historic Cypress Moon Studios in Sheffield. The resulting production pairs lyrics like “turning miles right into money” with an authentic look at life over-the-road, capturing both the financial hustle and the solitary nature of long-haul freight hauling.

What This Means for Drivers

Music and cultural nods rarely capture the grind of life inside a sleeper berth, but this project intentionally avoids polished studio clichés by working directly with working families. The accompanying music video, directed by Vaughn, features Blair Logistics driver Jeremy Johnson alongside his family and ATA President Mark Colson's daughter, Liv. For an OTR truck driver spending weeks away from home, seeing actual industry families represented on screen provides a rare moment of mainstream acknowledgment.

Industry Reaction

While fleets frequently roll out corporate appreciation campaigns during designated weeks in September, grassroots projects driven by regional associations tend to resonate more authentically with professional drivers. By anchoring the video in real-world terminals and family homes rather than staged commercial sets, the production team managed to capture the true grit of modern freight movement without sounding like corporate marketing.
