NOTTINGHAM, Md. — MISSION BBQ has officially kicked off its annual American Heroes Cup fundraiser, a nationwide initiative aimed at securing sponsorships for the 2024 National Wreaths Across America Day. Every purchase of the $4.99 commemorative cup at any of the company’s 131 locations nationwide triggers a $2 donation directly to Wreaths Across America (WAA) to help place remembrance wreaths on the graves of fallen service members.

For the professional driver, this campaign hits close to home as many in the trucking industry volunteer their time and equipment to transport these wreaths to cemeteries across the country. The partnership builds on a strong track record, as customers contributed over $369,000 during the 2022 campaign alone, which funded the placement of more than 24,600 wreaths. The effort highlights the deep-rooted connection between the trucking community and the military, as many carriers donate capacity to ensure these tributes reach their final destinations on December 16.

The campaign began with a significant event at the Nottingham, Maryland location, which hosted the WAA Mobile Education Exhibit. This traveling museum serves as a tribute to the service and sacrifice of American veterans, functioning as a dedicated welcome-home station for those who served in Vietnam. Founded in 2011 by Bill Kraus and Steve Newton on the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, MISSION BBQ has grown to 130 locations across 19 states, maintaining a business model that prioritizes support for military and first responder nonprofits.

What This Means for Drivers

Owner-operators and company drivers often find themselves hauling these wreaths as part of their regular lanes during the holiday season. Participating in or supporting these events offers a way to connect with local communities while honoring the fallen. Many trucking companies hiring for the winter season emphasize their charitable work, and supporting organizations like WAA is a common way for fleets to boost morale and show appreciation for veteran employees.

Industry Reaction

Karen Worcester, executive director of WAA, has publicly lauded the restaurant chain for its consistent commitment to community engagement and veteran advocacy. The collaboration is widely viewed as a model for how private enterprises can effectively support the missions of national non-profits. By keeping the focus on the stories of American heroes, the fundraiser ensures that the history and values of the military remain a priority for the next generation, a sentiment echoed by many in the logistics and transport sector who view the WAA mission as a point of professional pride.
