J.B. Hunt Reaches 35-Year Milestone in Intermodal Freight

LOWELL, Ark. — J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. is marking 35 years of intermodal operations, a service model that fundamentally altered how freight moves across the United States. The company officially launched its intermodal division in February 1990, starting with a single load moving out of Chicago to test a new partnership between road and rail.

The initiative, originally branded as “Quantum,” was the result of a high-level collaboration between J.B. Hunt founder Johnnie Bryan Hunt and then-Santa Fe Railway President Mike Haverty. At the time, the concept of integrating long-haul trucking with rail transit was considered a risky gamble. Today, it serves as the backbone of the company’s revenue, growing from a small fleet of 150 trailers into a massive network utilizing over 122,000 company-owned containers and 6,500 tractors.

Operational efficiency gained momentum through the adoption of double-stacking containers, which reduced loading times and increased capacity. By 2003, the intermodal division became the company’s primary revenue driver. Growth continued to accelerate, with the carrier hitting one million annual loads in 2010 and doubling that figure by 2018. Recent performance data from 2024 shows the company continues to push volume records on a weekly and monthly basis, cementing its status as the largest intermodal operator in North America.

What This Means for Drivers

For the average CDL-A driver, the expansion of intermodal networks translates into more consistent regional and local work opportunities near major rail hubs. While OTR truck driver positions remain a staple of the industry, the shift toward rail-heavy freight often means shorter hauls that get drivers home more frequently. Owner-operator contractors should note that as carriers like J.B. Hunt continue to dominate the intermodal space, the demand for drayage and terminal-to-terminal hauling remains a stable niche compared to volatile long-haul spot markets. This infrastructure shift is a primary reason many trucking companies are hiring for specialized roles that prioritize port and rail yard proficiency over cross-country mileage.

Industry Reaction

The success of the intermodal model has forced competitors to refine their own logistics strategies to remain relevant. While the initial 1990 partnership was an outlier, the industry has since moved toward a hybrid model where rail is utilized for long-distance efficiency and trucks handle the critical first and last mile. This evolution has changed the landscape for every driver on the road, as the integration of logistics technology and rail coordination has become a standard expectation for major carriers competing for market share.
