Charlie Prickett, president and COO of AAA Cooper Transportation, laid out the operational math facing fleets during the SMC3 annual winter meeting, highlighting that current charging speeds simply do not align with the relentless demands of multi-stop freight networks. While an EV can deliver roughly 400 miles of operation after a six- to seven-hour recharge cycle, that downtime knocks a unit out of service during prime freight-moving windows.

Many LTL operations rely on dual-use tractors that pull overland linehaul runs at night and handle local pickup and delivery routes during the day, pushing equipment utilization up to 20 hours out of a 24-hour cycle. Forcing these assets to sit idle for hours plugged into a charging station breaks the core economic leverage of asset velocity. Prickett noted that about half of AAA Cooper's 3,000 commercial vehicles fall into this dual-use category, meaning wide-scale electrification would effectively trap those trucks in urban box-turn duty while requiring carriers to buy extra equipment and hire more drivers to haul the same freight volume.

By contrast, traditional diesel truckload operations routinely cover up to 1,500 miles on a single 200-gallon tankful, requiring only 20 to 30 minutes at the fuel island before returning to the open road. Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc., AAA Cooper's parent company, is actively testing electric vehicle technology with two major customers, but industry leaders warn that the financial and logistical gaps are massive. Purchasing a battery-electric semi often runs twice the cost of a comparable diesel tractor, though regional subsidies like California's $208,000 per-truck discount and federal incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act help blunt the upfront blow. Even so, the American Trucking Associations estimates that current battery technology will cap Class 8 EV market share at roughly 10 percent.

CDL-A drivers and owner-operators running freight for major fleets should expect slower operational shifts if their employers transition to battery-electric equipment under current charging constraints. Extended downtime at terminals for power replenishment means fewer rolling miles per shift, which directly impacts per-mile pay structures and transit schedules. Fleet maintenance shops are also navigating steep learning curves, requiring technicians to undergo specialized high-voltage safety training to service the new powertrains safely.

Industry Reaction

Environmental regulators are pushing aggressive timelines to phase out internal combustion engines, but logistics executives caution that reality on the highway does not match policy blueprints. EPA SmartWay representative Denise Kearns points out that while early adoption orders will trickle in, the road ahead remains long and expensive. Bill Sullivan, executive vice president of advocacy at the ATA, emphasizes that vehicle payload capacity and heavy battery weights continue to threaten efficient freight movement across the board.
