Dallas, Texas — The latest Women in Trucking (WIT) Index shows 56.4% of surveyed freight transportation companies have adopted formal diversity and inclusion (DI) policies, a jump that signals a shifting culture across the sector.
\nIndustry analysts have long linked broader workplace representation to higher productivity and lower turnover. In trucking, where driver shortages and safety concerns dominate headlines, a stronger focus on gender equity and inclusive hiring offers a potential lever to attract and retain talent. The WIT Index, compiled annually by the Women in Trucking Association, tracks the share of women in critical roles and now adds a metric for formal DI policies, giving carriers a benchmark for progress.
\nData collected confidentially from more than 350 firms—including carriers, shippers and technology providers—show 19.3% of respondents are still drafting a DI policy, while the remaining 24.3% have yet to formalize one. Women now occupy 31.6% of C‑suite executive seats, 36.9% of senior leadership positions, and 28.4% of board director roles. “In recent years, many companies in transportation have made their DI policies publicly available not only to provide transparency to potential job seekers on the importance of gender diversity to their corporate culture but also for customers and business partners,” said Jennifer Hedrick, president and CEO of WIT. “As a result, diverse and inclusive workplaces earn deeper trust and more commitment from their employees and key stakeholders.”
